Payday loans in Yukon

Living in Whitehorse or Dawson City means paying northern prices with a southern-style paycheque. But a payday loan isn't one of the legal options here, and it's worth knowing why.

!

We don't send Yukon applications to payday lenders. With no designated payday regime in the territory, any loan above a 35% annual rate breaks federal law.

Can you get a payday loan in Yukon? Not from a licensed payday lender. The federal payday exemption only applies in provinces the federal government has designated, and Yukon hasn't been designated. That means every loan in the territory is capped at 35% a year, which the $14-per-$100 payday model can't meet. Yukoners usually turn to bank or credit union loans, employer advances or territorial assistance instead.

Why payday loans don't work here

The Criminal Code's criminal interest rate fell to 35% a year on January 1, 2025. Payday loans are exempt only when they're made by a lender licensed in a designated province. The territories don't have that designation, so the 35% cap applies to every loan. A two-week payday loan at $14 per $100 works out to about 365% a year, more than ten times the limit.

Be careful online

Some websites still advertise payday loans to Yukon residents. A lender charging those fees here would be operating outside the law, and you'd have very limited recourse if something went wrong. If a site asks you to pay an upfront fee or buy gift cards to "unlock" a loan, it's a scam. Report it to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.

The real problem: northern costs

Groceries, fuel and housing all cost more in the Yukon, and winter adds heating bills that southern budgets don't have. When a gap opens up, the cheapest fixes are usually local: a bank or credit union overdraft, a payment plan with the utility, or an advance from your employer.

What Yukoners can do instead

Bank or credit union credit

An overdraft, small personal loan or line of credit must stay under 35% a year, and usually costs a fraction of a payday fee.

Ask for a pay advance

Government, First Nations government and mining employers in the Yukon often advance part of a cheque when payroll runs late.

Yukon social assistance

If the shortfall is about rent, heat or food, the territory's income support program may be able to help with emergencies.

Talk to the utility first

ATCO Electric Yukon and fuel suppliers will often set up a payment plan if you call before the bill is overdue.

Yukon questions

Are payday loans illegal in Yukon?

Any loan in Yukon that costs more than 35% a year breaches the federal criminal rate. Because Yukon isn't designated for the payday exemption, payday-style loans can't legally be offered.

Could Yukon allow payday loans in the future?

Only if the territory put a payday regime in place and the federal government designated it. Until then, the 35% cap applies.

Where can Yukoners get free financial help?

Non-profit credit counsellors work by phone and online. The Financial Consumer Agency of Canada also publishes free guidance.
