Payday loans in Prince Edward Island
PEI has a small payday market and, until recently, one of the highest fee caps in the country. The 2025 federal change made a bigger difference here than almost anywhere.
What's the maximum cost of a payday loan in PEI? $14 per $100 borrowed, set by federal regulation since January 1, 2025. Payday lenders serving Islanders must be licensed under PEI's Payday Loans Act, you have a short window to cancel at no cost, and rollovers are restricted.

The biggest drop in Canada
Before 2025, PEI's maximum payday loan cost was among the highest in Canada. The federal cap brought it down to $14 per $100, the same as everywhere else that licenses payday lending. On a $500 loan, Islanders now pay at most $70 in fees.
Seasonal Island incomes
Tourism, fishing and farming give PEI some of the most seasonal incomes in the country. A gap between the last summer cheque and the first EI deposit is one of the most common reasons Islanders look for a short-term loan. If that's your situation, check when your EI payments will start before borrowing. A loan due on a payday that hasn't arrived yet is the fastest way into trouble.
Before you sign
Confirm the lender holds a PEI licence. Read the cancellation terms in your agreement, since they tell you exactly how long you have. And if you're facing more than one bill at once, a free credit counselling session can help you prioritize before you borrow.
