Payday loans in Manitoba

Manitoba has the tightest loan-size limit in the country. That can feel restrictive when you're short, but it was designed to keep repayments manageable.

How much can you borrow on a payday loan in Manitoba? Up to 30% of your net pay for the pay period, to a maximum of $1,500. The cost is capped at $14 per $100, and you can cancel within 48 hours, not counting Sundays and holidays, by giving written notice and returning the money.

The 30% rule in practice

Manitoba's limit is calculated from your recent net pay using a formula set in regulation. If your take-home pay works out to $1,200 for the period, the most a lender can offer is $360. That's smaller than Ontario's or BC's limit, and it means some people find a single payday loan won't cover the whole bill. If that's you, borrowing from a second lender to make up the difference usually makes things worse. A payment arrangement with the biller is often the better route.

Cancelling and prepaying

You have 48 hours after receiving the money to cancel, excluding Sundays and statutory holidays. Cancel in writing and return the principal. You can also prepay the loan at any time. Manitoba's Consumer Protection Office publishes a clear guide to these rights and handles complaints about lenders.

Winter and the budget

Manitoba winters are long, and so are heating bills. If a Manitoba Hydro bill is the problem, call before the due date. Payment arrangements are common, and they're much cheaper than borrowing. The same goes for rent: many Winnipeg landlords would rather agree a short delay than start an eviction process.
