Borrow responsibly, or don't borrow at all

We're a payday loan referral service telling you to look at cheaper options first. That's on purpose.

What are the alternatives to a payday loan in Canada? Ask the company you owe for a deferral or payment plan, request a pay advance from your employer, check whether an overdraft or credit card cash advance would cost less, ask a credit union about a small loan, and speak to a non-profit credit counsellor, which is free. A payday loan makes the most sense only for a one-time gap you can repay in full on your next payday.

Try these first

  • Call the biller. Utilities, landlords and phone companies often agree to a short extension, especially if you call before the due date.
  • Ask your employer. Many employers will advance part of your next pay, often for free.
  • Compare overdraft and cash advance costs. On $300 for two weeks, these are often cheaper than a $42 payday fee.
  • Look at your credit union. Some offer small emergency loans at far lower rates.
  • Check government programs. Provinces and municipalities run emergency assistance for rent, utilities and heating. Calling 211 is a quick way to find them.

A quick test before you borrow

Ask yourself three questions. Will my next pay cover this loan and my regular bills? Is this a one-time expense rather than a monthly shortfall? Have I ruled out a cheaper option? If any answer is no, pause before applying.

Avoiding the cycle

The real danger with payday loans isn't one loan. It's the second and third taken to cover the hole the first one left. If you notice you're borrowing every few weeks, that's a sign the problem is bigger than timing. A non-profit credit counsellor can look at the full picture and may be able to arrange a debt management plan.

Free help

Credit Counselling Canada lists accredited non-profit agencies across the country. Consultations are free and confidential. If you're dealing with more debt than you can manage, a Licensed Insolvency Trustee can also explain your legal options, including a consumer proposal.
