Payday loans with bad credit
Plenty of people who apply have a credit score they'd rather not talk about. Here's how lenders actually treat that.
Can you get a payday loan in Canada with bad credit? Yes, in many cases. Payday lenders mostly judge whether your current income can cover the repayment. A low score, old collections or a completed bankruptcy won't automatically disqualify you, though an active bankruptcy or a run of recent bounced payments can.
How common situations are treated
- Low score, steady job: often approved, because income carries the decision.
- Consumer proposal in progress: some lenders accept it, others don't. Check your proposal terms too, since new credit may be restricted while it's active.
- Undischarged bankruptcy: borrowing more than $1,000 while undischarged means you must disclose your bankruptcy to the lender, and most payday lenders will decline.
- Recent NSF payments: usually the biggest red flag, because it suggests the repayment might bounce too.
Ways to improve your odds
Apply for the amount you actually need, not the maximum. Make sure your pay dates are correct, and use the bank account where your pay is deposited. If you've just started a new job, wait until your first deposit has landed. Each of these helps a lender verify you quickly.
If you're declined
A refusal is information. It usually means the repayment looked too tight against your income. Rather than applying to five more lenders in a row, which can bring in riskier operators, consider whether the bill can be split, deferred or covered another way. Our alternatives guide walks through the options.
Common questions
Will a payday loan help rebuild my credit?
Usually not. Most payday lenders don't report on-time payments to Equifax or TransUnion. A secured credit card or a credit-builder loan is a better rebuilding tool.
Is there a minimum credit score?
Most payday lenders don't set one. They look at income and bank activity instead.
