How do payday loans work in Alberta? Alberta lenders must hold a provincial licence and can charge no more than $14 per $100. Alberta's rules were built around paying the loan back in instalments across more than one payday rather than in a single lump sum. You have two business days to cancel, and default charges on a late payment are capped by provincial rules.
What's different in Alberta
In most provinces a payday loan is due in full on your next payday. Alberta's 2016 reform changed that model so loans are spread over at least two pay periods. On a $600 loan with a biweekly pay schedule, that could mean two payments of $342 rather than one of $684. Same total cost, but a gentler hit to each paycheque. Ask your lender to show you the payment schedule in dollars before you sign.
Why Albertans borrow
Alberta paycheques can be strong but uneven. Rotational work, overtime that disappears for a month, the gap between a layoff and the first EI payment: each can leave a short, sharp hole. Winter makes it worse. A furnace repair in January isn't optional anywhere between Grande Prairie and Lethbridge. Before borrowing, check whether you qualify for emergency help through Alberta Supports, the province's front door for income and housing programs.
Protections to know
- Two business days to cancel and repay only the principal
- Lenders must provide a written agreement showing the total cost in dollars and as an APR
- Limits on extra interest if you default
- A lender can't make you take a new loan to repay an old one
If a lender breaks these rules, you can complain to Service Alberta's consumer protection team.
Alberta questions we hear often
Can I repay an Alberta payday loan in instalments?
Yes. Alberta's rules were designed around instalment repayment, so most loans are split over more than one payday. Your agreement will list each payment date and amount.
What's the cooling-off period in Alberta?
Two business days. Cancel in that window and you only repay what you borrowed.
Is there a payday loan limit in Alberta?
Yes. The federal maximum is $1,500, and lenders also have to consider your net income when deciding the amount.
