Payday loans in Vancouver
Vancouver rents leave very little room for surprises. When a bill shows up before your paycheque does, here's what a payday loan really costs and what to try first.
$700 for a security deposit top-up when moving within East Van
- You borrow
- $700.00
- Maximum fee
- $98.00
- You repay at most
- $798.00
Under the 50% rule, you'd need take-home pay of at least $1,400 for the pay period to be offered the full amount.
What are the payday loan rules in Vancouver? Vancouver residents can borrow up to $1,500, or 50% of their net pay, from lenders licensed by Consumer Protection BC. The fee is capped at $14 per $100, rollovers are banned, you can cancel within two business days, and repeat borrowers can ask for an instalment plan.
The Vancouver squeeze
When housing takes the biggest share of your income, everything else has to fit in the little that's left. A broken laptop for a freelancer, a dental emergency, or a SkyTrain pass on top of a deposit for a new place can all tip the balance. A payday loan can bridge one of those. If you find yourself borrowing to cover rent itself, that's a sign to talk to a non-profit credit counsellor or look into BC's rent supplement programs.
If it's a BC Hydro bill
Before borrowing, call BC Hydro. It offers payment plans, and its Customer Crisis Fund can help eligible customers facing disconnection because of a temporary crisis such as a job loss or illness. bc211 can also connect you with emergency help across Metro Vancouver.
Check the licence
Consumer Protection BC publishes a list of licensed payday lenders. Some online lenders targeting Vancouver residents aren't on it. If a lender can't show a BC licence, don't apply.
Gig and freelance income
Vancouver has a large freelance, film and gig workforce, and income can arrive in irregular lumps from several sources. Lenders want to see regular deposits, so a month of scattered e-Transfers from clients may be harder to verify than a payroll deposit. If that's you, apply using the account where most of your income lands, and expect a closer look. A small line of credit set up during a good month often works better for this kind of income.
